1. Newblog2011: 08/27/11 The Back Bay-South End T Station/Land Shark Lager/Structural Analysis
The Back Bay/South End T station is near the Boston Public Library. For more than a week, there has been an enormous, yellow, “Land Shark Lager” banner above the entrance. The banner has a picture of a bottle of beer on its side, with fins on the bottle. The banner says “FINS UP, BOSTON!”
Today, I noticed that there are orange-and-white-striped barrels, connected with yellow “Caution” tape, at both the left and right sides of the entrance. There was a construction worker in front of each group of barrels.
I went up to one of the construction workers and asked “What’s going on?”
He said “They’re working on the roof.”
I said “There are men on the roof now?”
He said “Yes.”
I asked “Why?”
He said “They’re doing structural analysis so that they can repair the leaks in the station.”
I went into the station. Immediately to my left, a large part of the floor had been sectioned off with yellow tape. Within that section, there was a large, green lift. There was also a construction worker there. I asked him what the lift was for.
He said “So that I can get up to the ceiling.”
I said “What’s going on?”
He said “They’re cutting holes in the roof to do structural analysis.”
I wanted to make sure that I’d heard him correctly. I said “They’re cutting holes in the roof?”
He said “Yes.”
