4. Newblog2011: 10/10/11 The Women's Lunch Place
October 10, 2011
Chris Evert, the former women’s tennis star, was at the Women’s Lunch Place on October 4, 2011.
In the front office, there’s still a large, cardboard copy of the check which she apparently presented to the WLP on that day, on behalf of Hood Simply Smart milk. I think I saw her get to the WLP on that day, but I left; I had other things to do.
The check says:
“October 4, 2011
$7,500 to the order of the Women’s Lunch Place”
It has the name Chris Evert on it, also, but it’s from Hood.
The event is still being publicized on the website for the WLP in the following way:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Make a Difference,
Taste a Difference"
Tennis Star Chrissie Evert
to visit WLP!

“Executive Director, Sharon Reilly, cuts the opening day ribbon on September 12th”

I stayed at the Pine Street Inn last night, and had breakfast there this morning. The little cartons of Hood milk, which are the same ones that go with public school lunches, still say “69% less fat than regular milk.”
There is now also a permanent display in the entrance of the Women’s Lunch Place, honoring donors to the WLP that made the rebuilding of it possible. I’m not going to say that the improvements to the facilities weren’t improvements. I am going to say that a LOT of money was given to the Women’s Lunch Place by corporations. In addition to Citizens and the State Street Foundation, a lot of money was given by Liberty Mutual.
Here’s what I think about people like Chris Evert making endorsements for situations that involve serious corruption:
--Maybe she’s under contract and has no choice.
--She was a tennis star when I was a little kid. It is possible that there are women of her generation, even successful women, who have no vision for women’s lives beyond accomplishing what they themselves achieved, which was perhaps more than what their mothers achieved but which still isn’t full equality with men.
After that check showed up, the level of personal abuse directed at me by individual staff at the Women’s Lunch Place increased. There had already been things going on such as Cheesecake Brownie Bites being served for dessert every day since the place reopened on September 12. There had already been things going on such as an entire group of female volunteers wearing rainbow-colored beanies.
The scarf I had wanted to have to work on as a stress-reliever is gone; it somehow disappeared from the locked art cabinet.
I got some extra time from before, but only have a few minutes left:
Even before the visit from Ms. Evert and the check:
--people wearing hats with pictures of shellfish, things that said “Dreams” on them, even “Cheese Boy”
--the kitchen playing the same Michael Jackson song whenever I was around
When people do things like that, that reference child molestation, I’m not sure if they think that I support child molestation and are trying to make me feel bad. If so, they’re wrong, and their behavior is not something that I consider the right way to express that thought but I can’t help but understand it, except for the fact that there have been signs of support for child molestation here, at a place which is supposed to be here to help homeless women and children.
If people think that I am against child molestation and they play Michael Jackson in order to be harassing, then they’re getting the effect they want. Regardless of what their motivation is for playing it, it’s awful for me to hear it.
After the check, from staff to whom I’ve never been but nice:
--fake sneezing, right in front of me
--Only staff are allowed to be in the laundry/shower room when a guest is taking a shower. I was taking a shower the other day and the staffperson there started doing fake coughing. I used “Bless you, hope you feel better soon” and she left.
--Green sweatshirt with a bird on it that said “Martha’s Vineyard,” and total denial when I said “Why do you think I deserve it? What’s the mentality behind it? What’s the reasoning?”
