Of all the horrifying things that have happened over the past year, the interest shown by individuals, businesses, and some other organizations in turning children into sex objects is the one that is the most difficult for me to understand. Unlike some of the other issues I've talked about, I don't see how anyone can be confused or misinformed about what pedophilia is or what it does to children.

Crystal Mangum was arrested and charged with a lot of things in February, 2010. If her arson charge was reduced to "injury to personal property," it's most likely because she tried to avoid burning her apartment down by putting her boyfriend's clothes in the bathtub before she allegedly tried to set them on fire. Why would she have tried to do anything to her boyfriend's clothes if he hadn't been abusing her? If she did that, it's the act of someone who is despairing.
What was the child abuse charge for? Was she found guilty of that because her children saw her and her boyfriend arguing? If that's what it takes to be convicted of child abuse, then there are A LOT of parents in the world who should have been convicted of child abuse and haven't been, so far.
Her children were the ones who called the police for help, saying "Please hurry. My mother's going to die." They weren't saying anything about being hurt by her or afraid of her, were they? So why does anybody think that Ms. Mangum's boyfriend wasn't abusive to her and to her children all the time, abusive enough to force her the rest of the way to mental instability?
How did the police treat Ms. Mangum when they got to the apartment? Someone once said to me that a much higher percentage than average of sociopaths go into jobs such as law enforcement because it's a job in which it's easy to abuse people. In general, I don't have anything against police officers; I think that they have a difficult job. However, there are more police officers than there should be who will use any excuse to be abusive to people, or who don't bother making any excuse at all. Is there any proof that Ms. Mangum "resisted a police officer," as she was proclaimed guilty of doing? Is it possible that all she did was try to tell them what really happened, that she was upset and scared when she tried to talk to them, and that the police wanted to arrest her in order to get publicity and accolades for themselves?
Never in any of the articles I read about that February, 2010 arrest did I read anything that proved that Ms. Mangum did anything along the lines of attempted murder, with which she was also charged. I might be able to believe that she said something threatening, but again, there's no proof of that at all. Even if she did say something threatening, plenty of people do that, but not very many people are in a situation in which just the word of their partners is enough to get them charged with attempted murder if the partners have no injuries of any kind.
