5. Newblog2011: 08/31/11 Signs around the Boston Public Library, as of today
--Bus stop on Boylston Street:
Diet Coke
Caption says, with a line through the “0,” to make it the number “0.”
“0 buyer’s
Remorse.
STAYEXTRAORDINARY”
To the right of the caption, there’s a picture of a Diet Coke bottle. The bottle is superimposed on the words “Diet Coke,” which are going sideways up the right side of the sign. The letter from the word “Coke” that is most visible is the red letter “K,” and the only letter from the word “Diet” that is written in that sideways section is “D.”
I did an Internet search on the name “Coca Cola” a minute ago. The first search result on the page was “My Coke Rewards: Turn Your Caps Into Rewards.”
I went to the website; the ad at the top of the first page was for Merrill Edge.
On the other side of that wall of the bus stop, an ad for “Ugg of Australia, for men” has appeared in the last couple of days.
“Ugh” is exactly how I feel about the way I get harassed when I’m at the Boston Public Library.
Vitaminwater put up an ad, too, in the past few days. It doesn’t seem like an unfriendly ad, and I realize that Vitaminwater existed, with its brand name, before the harassment started, but….as I’ve said before, whether references are positive or negative, if they’re explicit and/or constant, they’re harassing .
A difficult problem; in this case, it’s the placement of the ad around the library, and the placement of another ad near the Pine Street Inn, that made the ads seem as if they had something to do with me. I obviously can’t and wouldn’t want to tell Vitaminwater to stop advertising its product in the world or to stop existing….a difficult problem, indeed.
