5. Newblog2011: 10/14/11 Candidates used as code
There’s an issue I’ve been wanting to talk about for a while.
It’s really bad, and it’s always been really bad, that news stories have been used as code for other things. It’s misleading, irresponsible and dangerous.
Now, it seems that news stories about candidates for various political campaigns are being used as code, also.
The best candidates should be getting the most and the best attention. I don’t think there can be any question about that.
At Rosie’s Place, a shelter for women, I saw an ad for an election for Boston City Council. Here were the people listed:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Felix Arroyo
Michael Flaherty
Will Dorcena
------------------------------------------------------------------
Then, at the end of the page, in small print, it said:
------------------------------------------------------------------
“SAVE THE DATE:
Election Forum with candidates:
Sheneal Parker and Steve Murphy on Oct 12”

As far as corrupting races go, there's "mean and petty" code, which is still completely irresponsible, because the names of people and how they relate to or reference celebrities and characters have nothing to do with what a candidate can or can't do, his or her competence.
Then there's "support for child molestation" code, which is as bad as anything could be, with all of the other problems inherent in using important news stories as code.
