3. Newblog2011: Privacy Invasions and Harassment
Last night, I didn’t get dinner because I was at the library writing. I finally left at the last possible minute that I could. On the way back to the shelter, I stopped at a market and tried to find something to eat. I needed to be back at the shelter by 7:30 p.m., because I’d signed up to do my laundry then.
I found a package of cookies that seemed code-neutral. I saw that the price was 3-something, and I went to the counter. It was at least 7:15 p.m. when I was in line and the cashier told me that the price of the cookies was $3.69. I thought about not buying them, but I knew that I didn’t have time to pick out something else and that I wouldn’t get anything to eat at the shelter because dinner had been over for more than an hour.
I can’t worry about things like that; it’s not reasonable for me to be worrying about that.
Today, in addition to all of the other harassment that’s going on, the back cover of the free newspaper of The Boston Metro says:
“Now it’s easy to shape up your eating habits.
Introducing the latest in the GoalGetter family of wellness apps. FREE.”
It’s a Blue Cross MA ad that the Metro decided to put on its back cover for today. The whole back cover is green, also.
The front page is all harassment: a picture of a bird with a record with a caption that says “Vinyl. Resurgence.” A large title that says: “Irene kills one, causes destruction in Bay State,” with captions that say: “Southbridge man electrocuted by downed wire yesterday,” “Downed trees keep cleanup crews busy.” “Hundreds of thousands still without power,” an ad for the New England Aquarium next to another, larger caption that says “Who’s going to pay for all the cleanup?“ which itself has a smaller caption that says: “Irene brings back budget debate in Washington (page 06).”
