2. Newblog2011: 09/10/11 Government signs
There's a bus that brings the people who stay at the Boston Public Health Commission in Quincy to the shelter at night and back to Boston in the morning.
Yesterday morning, I saw the following two signs next to each other on the interior wall of the bus:
--A sign that showed a picture of a black woman in a purple shirt and a white sweater.
The caption says:
"She's afraid of public speaking.
She's afraid of dogs.
She's not afraid to speak up."
That's one of the ads for Homeland Security "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign to report "suspicious activity."
Next to it was a sign that showed a picture of two cans of soup next to each other. Both say "SOUP" in large letters on them. One can is red and one is green. The red one has large piles of salt around it, and salt is pouring out of the can through supposed holes in the side. The green can has much smaller piles of salt in front of it, and nothing to indicate that it has so much salt in it that the can can't contain it.
Next to the red can, there was a red circle with a white background and black writing. The writing said, in large letters:
"Sodium--870 mg."
Next to the green can, there was a green circle where the writing said:
"Sodium--240 mg."
The sign had a black background.
To the right of the cans of soup and the piles of salt, it said in large, white writing:
"Too much SALT
can lead to
HEART ATTACK
and STROKE."
The word "salt" is written in large, red, capital letters.
Next, on the same sign, in a green box with black writing, it says:
"Compare labels.
CHOOSE LESS SODIUM."
Then it says:
"Massachusetts Department of Public Health"
I tried to take notes on those signs while the bus was moving yesterday; the website for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health was listed also.
The day before that, one of the buses used to shuttle people for the shelter had a "If You See Something, Say Something" ad that showed a white man. The captions for that ad said:
"He's afraid of the ocean.
He's afraid of clowns.
He's not afraid to speak up."
