5. Newblog2011: 08/04/11 Gannett-owned Burlington Free Press, August 4, 2011—front page
At the top of the page:
“BCA
Burlington City Arts
Presents:
Festival of Fools August 5-7, 2011 Downtown Burlington”
Then there’s the name of the newspaper, the Burlington Free Press
Then there’s a large title that says:
“WHEN THE CUTS HIT HOME”
There’s a picture of a small boy and a grown man standing next to a chain-link fence on a hill and looking out over some land.
The caption for the picture says:
“(name of child) (left) and his mentor (name of man) stand on Mount Philo’s peak this summer after DREAM mentors and youths conquered the climb during a group outing. (Last name of man), an AmeriCorps member, has been (the child’s) mentor for two years.”
Next is a sentence in large, bold print before the article starts. It says;
“DREAM, a Vermont mentoring program, along with other nonprofits, are about to find out what happens when money from the cash-strapped federal government begins to dry up”
The article is by Elliot deBruyn, Free Press Staff writer
To the right of that article, there’s another article entitled:
“AG slaps Cabot for rBST claims”
There’s a smaller, bold-print sentence under that title that says:
“Company to clarify labels regarding use of growth hormone in cows”
At the end of that article, there’s the same picture of two packages of Cabot cheese that was on the front page of today’s Gannett-owned Times Argus.
On the left side of the page, at the bottom, there’s title that says:
“FOOLS
FOR THE CITY”
There’s a picture of a person with a black hat that has flowers, a butterfly, and an alligator or a crocodile pinned to it. The person is wearing glasses too big for his or her face (it could be either a guy or a girl in the picture), and a green ruffle around his or her neck.
The caption says:
“Frumpy and grumpy Mildred Hodittle joins about a dozen dizzy performers at the fourth annual Festival of Fools in Burlington. See this story and more in Weekend Section E.”
To the right of that picture, there’s another article that says;
“Earth’s two moons became on in ‘big splat’ theory.”
That article’s by Seth Borenstein, from the Associated Press. There’s a picture that goes with it. The caption says:
“Diagram shows a simulation of four stages of a collision between the moon and a companion about 4 billion years ago. Earth once had a second moon, until it made the mistake of smacking its big sister.”
The pictures seems to be credited to the “University of California, Santa Cruz via Nature”
The picture shows the 4 stages of the collision; the numbers given at each stage are:
“t = 0 h
t = 0.6 h
t = 1.4 h
t = 2.8 h”
