The reason that I would like it if Friday Night Lights kept the story that has Becky staying at Mindy and Billy’s house is that it’s invaluable for viewers to have role models who are willing to do what Mindy and Billy are willing to do. There are a lot of people who aren’t willing to get involved in the lives of children and teenagers who ask them for help; that happens all the time. What frequently happens then is that either those kids go back to very abusive situations, become homeless, or people who are willing to be involved for selfish and exploitative reasons step in; I don’t know how many common, emotional wounds are as painful or long-lasting as those inflicted by predators who present themselves as helpers in the time of need of someone who is not only vulnerable but also young and therefore naive. No matter how worldly teenagers think they are, they’re not. It doesn't matter who the teenager is; there has never been a teenager who has spent enough years on the planet to have developed the mental defenses that can help create some immunity to being emotionally hurt by the behavior of sick adults. There is nothing like an adult hurting a kid.
My parents never sexually abused me, but I've met plenty of people who weren't so lucky.
If you want to continue with that story, I won’t object; that’s all I’m saying.
(May 27, 2011 I took out something I had originally written here. The show's over, and it was a meaner thing to say than I had needed to say.)
