Newblog2011: 07/21/11 The first world, and the world beyond the first world/A theory about why what's happening is happening
Lately, I’ve been thinking that perhaps these issues continue to be perpetuated by celebrities and others with money, power and influence because those people and organizations view most of humanity the way that many Americans view the people in other countries who get paid pennies to make the things that end up being sold on shelves in the United States.
How does that usually go?
“You know, I heard that (fill in the blank) corporation has the most terrible working conditions and doesn’t pay its workers anything in (fill in the blank, non-1st-World-Country). Isn’t that too bad?” (laugh) “I know, I feel SO guilty whenever I buy stuff made by (that) corporation. Aren’t we bad? We’re so bad.”
And then the people who felt “so bad” forget all about what made them feel “so bad” for a few seconds.
I think that must be how all of the rich, powerful and influential people who are endorsing all of these terrible issues and inflicting them on Vermont as a test case state must feel about most of humanity. “Gosh, isn’t it terrible? It’s too bad, but there are only so many people who can matter in the world, and that’s us and not them.”
Let’s have a reminder of what they’ve been endorsing:
--Murder
--Abuse and degradation of women
--Child molestation
