5. Newblog2011: 09/01/11 The Mass. Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education advertises to hire teachers to “transform” Boston Public Schools so that they can “Make A Difference."
Here are notes I took this morning at the bus stop at the corner of Tremont Street and Charles Street Square:
There are two, large posters on the back of the bus stop. Both of them feature females of color. One shows a high school student, the other shows a little girl. The first one, that features a high school student, says this:
"NEXT STOP,
COLLEGE.
Boston's public high schools are preparing
students for a future full of opportunity.
(Then, in a red box, the left side says):
"Boston
Public
High Schools
better today
in every way"
(The right side of the red box shows the following sentences in quotes, presumably to indicate that the young woman in the picture said them):
" 'I have plans for my life. I want to be a journalist and become a news anchor. My school has prepared me to reach my goals.' "
(Below the quote, it says):
"CARLA / CLASS OF 2008 / HYDE PARK"
The second poster, showing a picture of a little girl with chalk in front of a green chalkboard, says this:
"YOU
can
make a
DIFFERENCE.
Amazing
teachers
Teach.
Lead.
Inspire.
Massachusetts Department of
Elementary and Secondary
Education
We are seeking outstanding educators
to help lead the TRANSFORMATION
of 35 urban public schools across
the Commonwealth.

The "MA" in AMAZING is in yellow, the rest of the word is in white.
The word "Transformation" in the paragraph is also in yellow, in comparison to the rest of the writing in that paragraph, and enlarged in comparison to the size of the type of the rest of the words in that paragraph.

"You can make a difference.
If so, the children in Massachusetts’ Turnaround Schools need you.
Did you know?
In nine Massachusetts communities, 35 schools are on the verge of a new beginning. State and federal policy changes have created new opportunities and provided new resources for these under-achieving “Level 4” schools to embark on an unprecedented turnaround aimed at ensuring that all students perform at the highest levels.
These schools have new resources — including greater autonomy and additional funding and services for students — to accelerate their progress. Many have dynamic new principals who believe in supporting and empowering teams of talented educators. They have committed teachers seeking talented new colleagues who can help the school achieve significant gains in student achievement. Above all, they have hard-working families who want only the best for their children.
Now they need you. "

On the other side of the same bus stop wall, there's a poster for "XFINITY." It's an all-red background. There's a picture of a blonde model with sunglasses on the right side of the poster. The captions say:
"XFINITY

"You can make a difference.
- Are you an outstanding teacher seeking new opportunities for leadership and growth?
- Are you interested in being part of a team of dedicated educators leading the transformation of an underperforming urban public school?
- Do you believe that every student has the capacity to learn and the right to a first-rate public education?
If so, the children in Massachusetts’ Turnaround Schools need you.
