3. Newblog2011: 08/01/11 Charter Schools
When I mentioned on my blogpage "6. Newblog2011: 07/30/11 Child Molestation support in Montpelier looks like what the support for it in Barre looked like a couple of months ago; hints that can't be misinterpreted, but not yet as explicit as what I wrote about yesterday" that the land trust sign on the “Sign Design” building said it was “chartered;” I’m sure that plaque was that way before stories about charter schools started getting used as code for sexual molestation.
Here’s the first definition of “charter” that I found on a Google search this morning @ 8:34 a.m.:
----------------------------------------------------------------
·
1. char·ter/ˈCHärtər/
Noun: A written grant by a country's legislative or sovereign power, by which an institution such as a company, university, or city is created and its rights and privileges defined.
Verb: Grant a charter to (a city, university, or other institution). More »
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought about making that clarification then, but, when I didn’t, I couldn’t get back to fix it until today.
I do still think that charter schools are at risk of being corrupted by corporations, because they are small and seem to rely heavily on grants. However, it seems to me that the true and original idea of charter schools, like the true and original idea of all public education, is benevolent.
