7. Newblog2011: 10/13/11 Abuse by people who work with the homeless
As with any situation which involves a group of people, there will be varying opinions among those people. I have something to say to the people who work with the homeless population and who participate in and encourage the harassment.
The homeless population has a high percentage of people, both men and women, who have a lot of issues of their own. Encouraging them in the harassment encourages them to be aggressive and disrespectful. I am not the only homeless women whom I have now seen being bullied by other homeless people, in the exact same ways that I have been bullied. I’m starting to see that more. I have also started to see other women feeling very self-conscious and bad about themselves for no good reason; for example, I’ve seen women who spill something on the floor get very nervous and talk constantly about how they have to “clean up their mess,” even as they’re dealing with the spill.
There’s no question that there are people in the homeless population who have been in jail; assault is a common charge in that population. I don’t think that there can be any question that there are men in the homeless population who have criminal histories that include things such as rape. There’s nowhere that I have been so far where there are homeless men where I haven’t been harassed. There’s no question that all of the harassment, everywhere, has encouraged the problems of people who already have problems. I don’t think that there can be any question that the encouragement of the harassment and abuse by staff who work with the homeless endangers me more the longer it goes on.
I think it’s also logical to assume that the way that homeless women have been getting treated by homeless men and by other people in their lives has been getting worse as a result of what’s been going on overall, and that the already precarious safety of all homeless women and children is being threatened even more because of the participation in the harassment and other issues by people who work with the homeless in any capacity.
The many times that I’ve said “What’s happening is a campaign to subjugate everyone to men, worldwide, to make victims where there wouldn’t otherwise be victims, and this really isn’t just about me,” I have meant it. It’s true.
